How I used autoresearch to fix Gumroad's flaky tests in a week
Last week Gumclaw made 206 commits to our repo while I slept. It fixed 13 flaky tests. I didn't write a single line of test code.
Gumclaw is Gumroad's team AI assistant. It runs on OpenClaw on a Mac mini at our Brooklyn office. It answers questions, reviews PRs, and now, apparently, fixes flaky tests.
Flaky tests are detective work with a 20-minute feedback loop. They pass locally, fail in CI, and after enough false alarms the team starts ignoring red builds. Nobody wants to fix them. So nobody does.
I wanted to see if Gumclaw could do the grinding for me.
Spoiler alert: it did.
This freed me to do my job. My highest-value work is building product, not debugging why a tax test fails 1 in 20 runs. Gumclaw ran overnight while I shipped features.
Here's how you can setup the same system for yourself.
The tool
I built openclaw-autoresearch, a plugin for OpenClaw. It's a port of pi-autoresearch (by Tobi Lutke) to the OpenClaw plugin system.
The idea is simple. You give it a command that measures something. Gumclaw runs it, gets a baseline, makes a change, runs it again. If the numbers improve, it commits. If they don't, it logs what it learned and what to try next. Then it loops.
All state lives in plain files. If the session crashes, you type /autoresearch resume and Gumclaw picks up where it left off.
What happened
I pointed Gumclaw at our test suite on March 18. One week later: 206 commits, 94 CI runs, 13 merged PRs. Race conditions, timing issues, browser session corruption, test cleanup hooks leaking between tests.
The best find wasn't even a flaky test. It was a real bug: when remapping file IDs, A became B, then B became C, silently corrupting file references. The flake was just the symptom.
What the agent found
It was methodical. Fix a class of failures, trigger CI, log the results, move to the next class.
When a fix didn't hold, it wrote down why and what to try next. Those notes fed an ideas backlog that kept it from repeating failed approaches. By experiment 20, it had built a map of which tests were flaky and why.
Some fixes took multiple iterations. One tax input field went through four different approaches before Gumclaw found one that held across CI runs.
What I learned
Flaky tests are a perfect target for this. Green or red. Pass or fail. The agent ran 30+ CI cycles overnight without getting bored.
The ideas backlog is the killer feature. Every failed experiment forces Gumclaw to write down what it tried. It stops repeating mistakes.
It takes time: 206 commits for 13 PRs. Fixing a flaky test is easy. Proving it's fixed means running CI enough times to trust the flake is gone and not hiding. The loop handles that grind.

#1 Avoidance can't steer
And if you're trying to avoid an emotion, it means you're already in it.
#2 The biggest sign that you're avoiding something = chronic overthinking
"I don't know this is right" is just another way of saying "I'm scared I won't be able to handle the feeling if it's wrong."
#3 The brain doesn't understand "don't."
It orients towards whatever you're tracking. Track fear and you get more fear. Hint: Avoiding fear = tracking fear.
#4 Avoidance produces short-term relief and long-term stagnation.
Each avoidance reinforces the belief that the feared thing is unmanageable.
#5 You're not avoiding failure. You're avoiding the feeling of failure.
There is a big difference between the two.
#6 The cost isn't merely missed opportunities. It's your identity.
You become someone organized around avoidance of fears rather than your wants. You play not to lose rather than playing to win.
#7 The question isn't "What am I trying to prevent?" it's "What target actually matters?"
Only one of these produces forward motion.
#8 If you want clarity, map your last five major decisions.
Name what you avoided in each decision and what you desired in each decision. Which of the two was the stronger pull? That pattern exposes where you attention lives.
#9 Until you replace avoidance with aim, your life will feel like course correction instead of creation.

I think I finally figured out why OpenClaw is amazing and took off like wild fire and why Peter is a genius, as Altman called him.
And it's actually a different way of looking at it.
It's not a DeepSeek moment for agents.
It's a Napster moment.
And just like Napster it will eventually force the industry to change. In essence when Napster came out the entire world told the music industry we don't want to buy CDs anymore and if you don't provide us a digital download experience we are just going to take it until you do.
It forced the industry to create Apple Music and eventually Spotify. Both essentially killed most music piracy by making it ubiquitous and cheap and good.
But it forced change.
The same will now happen to software. Here's why:
In essence OpenClaw lets you take what vendors don't want to give you: Unified access to countless applications.
We all want a personal assistant that can talk to freaking everything and do anything for us in the digital world.
But vendors don't want this. They want you locked into their bullshit.
For example, none of the messaging platforms want bots on there. None. They all have explicit policies against them and make it hard to do this. WhatsApp doesn't want you on there. Signal. Telegram's bot father is garbage. It's all designed to keep bots out.
They were designed for a pre-agentic era when bot = spam.
Many other things are like this. The API layers are gated, hoop-jumping bullshit. Go get an enterprise account and wait for approval and yada yada. Want access to WhatsApp? Get a business account and attach a number (what small business has a real number anymore 😂) and messages can't come from a person, etc. Google ads? It's not just an auth, it's go get a special manager account and create an enterprise key and blah blah blah.
It's a horrible experience because it was all designed for corporations to control access.
Now people are saying, make your app easy to access and accessible to me and my machine avatars and do it in a headless way or you will be dead.
Peter hacked around all this by making everything command line in the classic Linux style and using
things like an open source library that reverse engineered the web version of WhatsApp. It's all a bit house-of-cards-y because he had no choice.
At my company we had a similar idea early (and failed). Basically we wanted to make the best multimodal/computer using model because then it doesn't need an API or access hoops. You just go through the human interface layer and ain't nobody going to stop you. We failed because we weren't big enough and it's really a job for the mega-labs to solve because it is a hard problem and costs a shit ton of money.
Peter was much smarter. Make it all command line because that is ready now. Use any reverse engineered library or project or proxy available come Hell or high water and make it work by any means necessary even if it is hacky.
In short, he signaled to the software world that they better change and change fast or we are going to do this anyway and you can't stop us.
Of course some are foolishly trying. Meta is banning Claws on WhatsApp, etc.
They will all try to build their own gated, controlled, enshittified version of this thing.
They will fail.
And eventually everyone will offer a clear, easy way to get access via API for agents or they will be gone.
In essence OpenClaw gave people what they wanted, which was an app connected to everything, even when most of the vendors don't want you to have this.

I worked at Epic Games for two years. This is real, and the strategy behind it is smarter than most people realize.
Tim Sweeney has spent nearly two decades buying North Carolina forest land. 50,000+ acres across 15 counties. He’s now one of the largest private landowners in the state. The purchases started in 2008, right after the real estate collapse wiped out developers who had been planning golf resorts and luxury communities on biodiverse wilderness.
Sweeney paid $15 million for Box Creek Wilderness, a 7,000-acre stretch in the Blue Ridge foothills containing 130+ rare and threatened species. Developers had owned 5,000 of those acres before the crash. He bought them for conservation prices when nobody else was bidding.
He runs the acquisitions through an LLC called “130 of Chatham.” He buys the land, holds it for years, then either donates it to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, sells it at a discount to state parks, or hands it to land trusts. In 2021, he donated 7,500 acres in the Roan Highlands to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. Largest private land donation in North Carolina history.
The part people miss: he told the News & Observer that since 2021, land got too expensive to keep buying. So he shifted focus to converting his existing 50,000 acres into permanent conservation status. He’s locking the land into legal structures that make development impossible regardless of who owns it in the future.
A billionaire worth roughly $6 billion is spending tens of millions acquiring wilderness specifically during economic downturns, then giving it away or placing it under permanent legal protection. The land will outlast him, Epic Games, and Fortnite.
That’s the part that separates Sweeney from billionaires who write checks to get their name on a building. The building depreciates. The forest compounds.
